An event recorder, when connected to a motion detector and camera, will record only when triggered by motion. Real time recorders will record up to 24 hours in real time (30 Frames Per Second) on a standard video cassette tape.
Time lapse VCR's will record so many frames per second depending on the number of days that need to be captured on one tape. Digital recorders can provide months of recording depending on the number of cameras being recorded and the selected resolution of recording.
